Tibet Hotels

The Tibet Hotels listed here are an abbreviated compilation. They are by no means an exhaustive list. As with most things in China, things change quickly. If there are any questions regarding amenities, locations, etc., please contact the hotel directly. I recommend double checking with the hotel and the tour group as well.

The hotels are listed according to the region you will be visiting. The rankings are based upon personal experiences, research, and feedback from visitors and local Tibetans. Expect the star rankings to be less than what you would expect from a western hotel. So, for example, a 3-star hotel in Tibet may be considered equivalent by most western standards as a 2-star. It is the safe way to prepare. While there are luxurious hotels available in Tibet, some may not measure up to a traveler`s expectations.

Most Tibet hotels are situated in Lhasa. However, the other regions do have some quality hotels available. With tourism increasing ever so much, the rise in new hotels is also prevalent. Shigatse, Nyingchi, and Shannan are just several of the areas that also have good hotel facilities available.

Generally, the better hotels have modest rooms ranging from 30 up to several hundred. Yes, there are luxurious hotels-most would even please the most finicky traveler. But again, don`t expect the Ritz.

Most amenities western travelers would consider standard may not always be present. Again, it is best if you need something that is important, contact the hotel directly. Don`t always rely on the tour company to answer your questions.

Be prepared for such differences such as shared bathroom facilities or periodic hot water availability(some hotels only provide it several times a day-some don`t have it at all). Don`t take for granted such common hotel amenities such as heat or shower facilities. These inconveniences can create problems for the visitors-especially in the winter months!

While there are a number of things to look out for when choosing a Tibet hotel, there are quite a few hotels that now offer such goodies like cable/satellite tv, pay-per-view movies, gyms, hair salons, shops, bars, medical services, currency exchange, and other features. Just don`t overlook the usual conveniences like air conditioning, heat, elevators, etc. Although a hotel may offer you a hairdryer or oxygen(some actually do!), they may still have somewhat spartan decor or less than adequate service. I hope you find the following lists helpful. If anyone would like to comment on a hotel, please feel free to do so. We always welcome feedback.
