Nagqu city guide

Nagqu(also spelled Nagchu) is located in the northern region of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Its name is derived from the river(of the same name), which is the northern most part of the Nujiang river. The river was also referred to as the black river in the past.

The region is over 300,000 sq km and has a population of over 370,000 people. It is broken up into 10 counties, along with a special district area. The largest region of Tibet, it has recently grown into an economic and political center of northern Tibet.

The climate, as to be be expected is harsh. The region can experience very cold temperatures and dry air. Sandstorms are prevalent and travelers should be careful. Always check the forecast before heading out of the urban areas.

The area is highlighted by grassland plateaus and towering mountains in the background. The splendid scenery adds to the travelers` list of things to see. Since the region is rather large, settle in one area and focus on the sites there.

Events and places that are worth seeing include the Shodain Monastery, located in Nagchu county. There is also a special horse race each year. Many different festivities are also held during the event. Among the list of must sees in Tibet are Namco Lake. The eastern part of the region has some points worth mentioning including the Painpin forest and the Dodoga Skull Wall. The Hor Kings Palace Ruins and Lupu and Bacang Monasteries are also interesting sites. South of Nagqu county one can find the Zoima Canyon which is another scenic spot worth viewing.

Qamdo city guide

Chamdo Town

Chamdo Town

Qamdo(also spelled Chamdo) is located in the far eastern corner of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The region is broken up into parts by 3 rivers-the Nujiang, the Lancangjiang, and the Jinshajiang. The Hengduan Mountains traverse the region. Within the region can be found forests, valleys, lakes, and hot springs.

The region is approximately 120,000 sq km and its population exceeds 600,000. There are 11 counties and although the region is not well developed, there are a number of industries in the area. More roads are now being developed, which should increase the influx of tourists to this “haven of natural beauty”.The recent completion of the Bamba airport should also contribute to the rise in tourism.

The climate is harsher in these parts than in other parts. The weather can change suddenly. Expect colder temperatures during the winter and storms during the rainy season(July-September).

Qamdo`s remoteness adds to its beautiful, unscathed landscape. Because of the lack of development in most counties, there are a number of natural scenic spots to choose from. One can spend a whole vacation in Qamdo and still not see all there is to see. For simplicity purposes I’ve listed some spots according to the counties they can be found. Check with your tour guide to see whether transportation will be a problem. Despite the recent building of new roads, many still don`t exist to access the many treasures that are awaiting in Qamdo!

Lhasa city guide

Lhasa

Lhasa

Lhasa, translated in Tibetan as the place of God, is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is centrally located and became the capital in the year 1965. Not only is it the political and economic seat of Tibet, but it is also the religious center as well.

Lhasa prospered for centuries until the 5th Dalai Lama came into power. It was this Dalai Lama who claimed the city as the political center and would subsequently build the magnificent Potala Palace.

The city sits on the north border of the Lhasa River and covers an area of roughly 29,500 sq km. There are 7 counties and the climate is said to be considered temperate. The average annual temperature runs at 7.5 degrees C. January can drop to 2.3 degrees C on average , while July holds at 15.5 degrees C. The city gets a lot of sun during the year, hence earning its nickname the city of sunlight.

Lhasa in Tibet

Lhasa in Tibet

Lhasa is by far, the most urbanized region in Tibet. The city now has increased spending on its infrastructure and made it what it is today-a blend of past and present. The Downtown has shopping facilities, luxury hotels, restaurants, night clubs and bars. It is hard to go wrong in this Tibetan region-You can always have enough to see with respect to siteseeing and still have most modern conveniences.

Transportation is probably the most accessible here than in any other region of Tibet. One can find(or rent) cars, taxis, bikes, or rvs. While the cost can be expensive, and the traffic at times dangerous-it is doable. The Qinghai-Tibet Highway, Sichuan-Tibet Highway, and the China-Nepal Highway merge in this region, making travel to any of these places rather convenient. The Gongar Airport is approximately 50 km from the downtown-easily accessible by taxi.

With respect to attractions-once again, Lhasa has plenty to offer. In fact, over 150 scenic places are there for the taking(or viewing).Among the best include Potala Palace, Jokhang Monastery, Dragon Kings Pool, Norbulingka, Drepung Monastery, Sera monastery, the Tubo Alliance Tablet(from the Tang Dynasty), and the Tibet Museum. Other monasteries noteworthy include Curpu, Yerba, Gaindain, and Ramoche. If hot springs are your cup of tea, then make sure you check out the Dezhong and Xungba Gyura Springs. Of course, one can`t miss Nam Co-one of Tibet`s best lakes to visit. The Nyainaentanglha mountains are a short drive away and don`t forget Barkhor Street located in the heart of downtown. There you can get a feel for the “old Lhasa” and pickup some crafts or religious pieces, as well as other souveniers- a must stop!

Once again, be aware of common differences that may be present when choosing a hotel in Tibet. Note that problems can occur and things do change rather quickly(and without notice sometimes). Please contact the hotel of your choice with any concerns. This will ensure that your stay will be most enjoyable.

    Chamdo Hotels Review

Although there are not a lot of places to stay in Chamdo, there are several Chamdo hotels that do exist. Chamdo is less developed than other areas in Tibet. It is located on the far eastern border of Tibet. It borders neighboring China-its motherland.

Again, please note that it is wise to expect some difficulties or changes along the way. Be prepared for these challenges or differences that may arise. As mentoned before, don`t always base your decision on a hotel just because of the star rating. These ratings are only a guideline and often don`t reflect the true nature of the hotel as it may in a western country. Please contact the hotels if there are any questions or want to double check the information provided here. This will ensure a safe and comfortable stay.

Nagqu, being a rural, less developed area of Tibet, has less hotels to choose from. This is the case with several other areas in Tibet. Nevertheless, the hotels listed here are not an exhaustive list. We will try to add to this list in the future.

    Lhasa Hotels Review

Lhasa hotels-Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and therefore has the most hotels compared to any Tibetan city. The list here is an abridged version. There are many more hotels located in Lhasa.

In fact, since the tourist boom started a short time ago, many more hotels are being built. China has also contributed to the addition of these as well. This list will be updated periodically.

As mentioned on previous pages, things in China change rather fast. So it is best to check with the Lhasa hotel of your choice if there are any concerns or issues. Do not rely soley on the advice of your travel agent. In the end, this will ensure a pleasant stay at whatever hotel you decide upon.

Note: Not every hotel in Tibet has a star rating. This does not imply that those listed without stars are inferior to those with star ratings.
